Why the colour alone does not tell you the cause
Rectal bleeding is not always caused by haemorrhoids, and the colour of the blood by itself cannot tell you the cause. That is why bleeding is assessed rather than assumed.

How it is assessed
- Review of symptoms and bowel habits
- Examination of the anus and rectum
- Proctoscopy when appropriate
- Colonoscopy may be advised depending on age, risk factors and symptoms
If I see blood, can I assume it is haemorrhoids? No. The cause of bleeding should be assessed, particularly if it is recurrent or accompanied by a change in bowel habits.
If your symptoms persist or you are unsure of the cause, arrange an assessment.
