Thyroid Conditions & Cancer
A thyroid lump deserves proper assessment.
Thyroid nodules may be caused by benign or malignant conditions. Ultrasound and biopsy may be required to determine the risk and whether treatment is needed.
When should you be assessed?
- A lump at the front of the neck
- A lump that is increasing in size
- Persistent hoarseness without a clear cause
- Difficulty swallowing or a feeling of pressure in the neck
- Enlarged lymph nodes in the neck
How is it assessed?
- Examination of the neck and thyroid
- Thyroid function tests
- Thyroid ultrasound
- FNAC for nodules that meet the criteria
- CT scan or other imaging in selected cases
Treatment Options
If surgery is required, it may involve removing part or all of the thyroid gland depending on the diagnosis, size and extent of disease. Histopathology results help determine further treatment and follow-up.
